How common is back pain?

Back pain is an incredibly prevalent condition—nearly 90% of people will experience it at least once in their lifetime. While most cases improve within 4–6 weeks, some individuals may develop chronic back pain that can significantly impact their daily lives and ability to work.

The good news is that most back pain resolves without requiring scans or medication. Research shows that findings like degenerative changes visible on MRI often don't correlate with pain or disability. For example, many older adults with no back pain still show signs of “wear and tear” in their spine, emphasizing that such changes are a normal part of aging rather than a definitive cause of pain.

The spine is a remarkably strong and resilient structure. Contrary to common fears, bones, joints, and discs don’t simply “slip” or “go out of place” when you experience back pain. Instead, back pain’s underlying causes are often muscular or may relate to lifestyle factors.

The Most Effective Back Pain Treatments

Gentle exercise and a gradual return to your usual activities—sometimes with minor modifications—are often the best ways to recover. Staying active helps strengthen muscles, boost circulation, and promote healing, while also preventing stiffness and deconditioning.
